It’s so damn hot in Tulsa. I thought us leaving DFW was for escaping the heat. It’s everywhere, I tell you.

Day 3: least favorite team.

Chelsea

Just because, to me, it seems like they’ve bought their success. They seem like the “Yankees of football” more than United does. Plus, I hate their fans.

Day 2: favorite team.

Manchester United.

I’d tell you why but I honestly don’t have the time or know where to start. My birth gift was a Manchester scarf, two generations of my family are from there, my favorite American keeper played there, one of FCD’s best players was from their academy, they play so well and against any opponent too. No matter if it’s Phila Union or Bayern Munich, they stick to the code set by the Gaffer and it’s incredibly difficult for me not to smile and enjoy them at their best. When they’re at their best, I’m at my best. Many people say they are the Yankees of the football world, which is only true in the factor of the club’s financial worth. They haven’t bought a star player in the last few years, unlike Chelsea, L’pool, Man Shitty, and Real who the media leak stories about week in and week out about the next blockbuster signing. Most of them, last season especially, are flops. Sir Alex knows how to run the team with class and he can work the league like no other manager can. I better stop now.

“when United are at their best, I am close to orgasm…”

Day 1: favorite league.

MLS and the Barclays Premier League.

The second one is easy choice for anyone who loves diehard fans tearing away at their rival counterparts, the hardest tackles you’ll see on foreign primadonnas trying to win over crowds and earn themselves a song or two, local academy products coming in to save the match for fans watching in pubs all around, and cult heroes spreading their name all over the world and scoresheets. It’s hard for me as I live in Texas, but I wish every single Saturday and Sunday morning of the season while watching my boys from Trafford that I could take a firsthand part in enjoying it.

The first is probably not the first choice of many fans around the world, but that’s exactly why I chose it. While it is heart-warming to see a league strive so much to improve its quality for its supporters’ enjoyment, sometimes I get the feeling that we are trying to prove too much too soon. Yes, the league needs more of stars and homegrown products to grow, and yes, comparison to other European leagues is useless. This isn’t really a bad mark, though. In the wake of the MLS All-Star game, I’ve been thinking a lot about how and why most of the MLS franchises have such passionate support groups. These groups don’t match the quantity of stampeding supporters of Boca Juniors or Besiktas, but the quality is evident at every home game. It may be anything but humble, even cocky, but the never-say-die spirit brought by USMNT’s incredibly dramatic World Cup success to the entire United States is here to stay. Whether it’s in the new stadium of Red Bulls New York or with the fans of high-flying LA Galaxy singing for Donny and Buddle, Americans are proud of their league currently and aren’t afraid to show it. This will continue to grow as support for the US’s bid for a WC increases, more Americans play for bigger European teams (Donovan to City? Altidore to Fenerbahce?), and the USMNT grabs more headlines for years to come.
